The name Sunshine Coast is now well known, but back in the 1950s and early 1960s, the area was known as the Near North Coast. This week we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast.
A more appealing and memorable name was sought in the hope that would help attract tourists and investment to the area. This clearly worked, with more than two and a half million tourists visiting the Sunshine Coast each year. The name ‘Sunshine Coast’ was officially endorsed by the then Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa councils in 1966 when it was agreed to utilise the name to cover the three Shires.
It’s interesting for someone like me who was born and raised here, to be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast; as, at 34, I’ve only ever known it to be called the Sunshine Coast, or the Sunny Coast, as many now affectionately refer to it.
I commenced my real estate career in 2000, on the cusp of the new millennium, and over these past 17 years have witnessed some significant changes to the property landscape across the region, as well as changes in the market cycles. I have been fortunate to have worked through some very buoyant years during this time, with the Global Financial Crisis being the most challenging period; but all in all, the health of the Sunshine Coast property market has been glowing.
With the massive public and private infrastructure investment being undertaken across the region, the Sunshine Coast is currently booming; and last year was Queensland’s best performing market. There is a lot of confidence in this region, which is driving huge levels of investment; this is then creating employment opportunities, which in turn creates increased demand for housing. If you look at the pipeline for the next decade, and even beyond; the Sunshine Coast should continue to perform strongly. It’s an exciting time to live and invest here.
Happy Anniversary Sunshine Coast!
