A checklist can often be the saving grace when it comes to moving day. Whether they’re essential items, or simply things that make the process easier, there are certain things you don’t want to forget.
Robyn Amott, a professional organiser, says the biggest thing is to think about the upcoming 48 hours and being prepared. So whether the kids are at school that day, or you perhaps need a cup of tea at the end of the day – vital things will differ for everyone.
Here are a few need-to-haves and nice-to-haves for the next time you move.
Nice-to-have: Post-Its
A bit of planning before you start ripping everything out of your boxes can go a long way. Go around to each cupboard and shelf you can label to indicate where the coffee mugs or wine glasses will go.

Need-to-have: Internet
Even if you think you can survive off mobile data for a few days (until the kids jump on TikTok or the PlayStation), having your internet hooked up and ready to go will make life so much easier.
If you haven’t organised an internet connection prior to moving in, it’s not likely to happen overnight either – so even if you don’t need it immediately, don’t let yourself get stuck without it for days on end.
Need-to-have: First aid
It doesn’t go astray to have a few pain killers, band-aids, anti-histamines (especially if dealing with dust) or other basic first aid supplies near the top of the packing pile.
In the event medical supplies are actually needed, the last thing you want to be doing is rifling through all your boxes to find them.
Nice-to-have: A cuppa
You can’t be expected to get through moving day without one (or several) cups of tea or coffee, right?!
A kettle, some cups and your desired tea or coffee, milk and sugar options can make moving day easier.
Nice-to-have: A few groceries
Ordering some groceries online and having them delivered – which is one of the beautiful things we can do now thanks to the digital age we live in. A few simple ingredients to whip up a quick but filling meal can make all the difference between being hungry and hangry!
Perhaps another – even more beautiful – option is to order in dinner, in which case you may just need a bit of cutlery, plates or serviettes. It’s not long term, and packing and unpacking realistically happens over a few days.
Having said that, if you have kids – or even if you don’t – it doesn’t hurt to have a few healthy snacks at the ready on moving day.
