How Kitchen Design Will Evolve

As a result of new experiences, together with our changing physical and psychological needs, our kitchen design is constantly changing and evolving. As the world begins to ease social restrictions after coronavirus, people will start to pull on those needs and experiences.

If there is anything we can take away from these trying times, is social distancing and better hygiene practises will translate into our homes, specifically the kitchen.

Smart appliances

Buttons and switches are a breeding ground for germs. We’ve started seeing homeowners incorporate more smart technology in their kitchens, including stovetops with sensors that turn on when a pan touches the surface.

More entertaining and cooking space

According to research, 40 per cent of kitchen renovations involved increasing the size of the kitchen from 2016 to 2018. It’s anticipated that having a bigger kitchen is an even more predominate priority now so – plus whenever MasterChef pops up on our screens we always aspire for a bigger kitchen with all the fancy appliances and hibachi grill.

If increasing the size of your kitchen is not a possibility, try connecting it with the outdoor area as an alternative, so that allows you the option of opening up that space to enjoy social gatherings, while social distancing.

Multi-functional kitchens

Isolation meant our daily routine and activities were taking place inside the comfort of our own homes, and we needed to quickly adapt our home to support this. Those living in smaller homes or apartments were not able to designate an entire room for an office or a gym turned their attention to the kitchen and dining areas.

Through clever joinery and design to create extra space and storage, it’s expected this will be an ongoing trend for homeowners.

Better storage

Although not something to be proud of, fear of COVID-19 in its early days contributed to mass panic buying, and ultimately this may have triggered a new desire for more pantry and storage space in the kitchen.

It’s been reported an increase of butlers pantries will be a more occurring trend in kitchen design.
