Whether it’s a newly purchased home, or a new rental you’re about to move into moving can be anywhere from exciting to exhausting! It create an opportunity for a fresh start, but first you need to figure it all out.
We’ve put together some tips that you can add to your moving check list to help simplify your move and make things as easy as possible.
GET A HEAD START
Starting early is the best way to avoid stress, not only will it help you plan when you need to be available, it will also help the packing process – not feeling overwhelmed by a large amount of work in a small amount of time
DO A CLEAN OUT
Take this as a fresh, new start. Before packing away your memories and belongings do a clean out of things you have hoarded over the years. As Marie Kondo would say, if it doesn’t spark joy – throw it away!
Go through everything, cupboards, boxes shoved up on a top shelf or piles hiding under beds! Anything that isn’t used, or isn’t of value to you is clutter… and probably not needed in your new home!
PACKING
Choose one room at a time. Instead of packing everything at once, one room at a time makes a huge task much easier, and far less overwhelming… and will save you time in the long run.
In addition to this, one room at a time will take that ‘I don’t know where to start’ feeling away. Tackling a room or two per day can be perfect!
HAVE A BOX OF ESSENTIALS
Regardless of how organised you are, it is highly unlikely you will get the chance to unpack everything on the first day (maybe even the second). To save you having to open 20 boxes to find one thing, a ‘box of essentials’ will make life a breeze.
Your box can include everything and anything you may need. Towels, chargers, pyjamas toiletries or cooking utensils. Depending on how long you plan to take to unpack will depend on what you’ll need. Keep in mind your routine and make sure you have the essentials that youll need that first night.
CREATE A SYSTEM
The more organised you are during the packing, the easier the unpacking will be. To know where everything goes in the new place, instead of just throwing all boxes together, you need to create a system that works for you.
Some people will opt to use lists, or index cards to keep track of a boxes contents.
You can put screws, bolts, nuts and any other small, easy – to – lose items in separate small boxes or plastic bags that are clearly labelled as well.
Make sure you also write down the room the things belong to on the moving box itself. This way you will know what belongs in which room, making it easier to use the one room at a time method for the unpacking.
HIRE HELP
Getting hired help can increase your budget spend, the money will be well spent.
There are many things you can hire people to help with, cleaning, packing, moving (even if only the larger items). Hiring people to help is the best idea to make moving less burdensome. Also, consider moving on weekdays, as hiring companies don’t have an unlimited number of staff.
With most people moving during weekends, the demand for help is lower during these two days, which means that if you can pull off a weekday move, you may be charged less.
