Summer is here! With the heat & humidity rising on the coast, we tend to turn straight to the air-conditioning on those hot summer days to keep cool. However, there are many ways to cool down your home, which don’t use lots of energy and push up the power bill.
Here are some great tips on keeping your home cool and saving money at the same time.
- Ceiling or pedestal fans can cost 10 times less than running an air-conditioner in the same room, so consider if you really need to turn on the A/C.
- Set the temperature to between 23 and 24C. Every degree cooler uses more energy and equals more power, costing you more on your power bill. For those humid days, simply taking the moisture out of the air provides instant relief!
- Close the doors and windows around the house where you don’t want the air-conditioning to reach or close off those vents. This maximises the effectiveness in the area you want to keep cool.
- Turn the air-conditioning off at night and open up the windows on both sides of the house to create a beautiful cross-flow of air.
- Use external blinds to keep the sun and glare out of the house during the day. This will naturally keep your home cooler.
- If you just can’t bare the heat and don’t have air-conditioning, there are some fairly efficient portable air-conditioners on the market or pedestal fans that can help to cool you down.
Hopefully, these tips can help you keep your home cool and keep your energy bills down as well.
